Dementia - a Norfolk challenge

On Monday of this week my staff in our School of Health and Community Studies organised a day long conference on Dementia. Based at our fantastic St Andrews House facility (http://tinyurl.com/62tmjkf) over 90 students turned up to hear a variety of speakers - including from lecturers from the UEA, Willie Cruikshank from the Dementia Alliance and a number of other experts - talk about Dementia and what it means for Norfolk.

Norfolk County Council continues to support post-16 Transport Subsidy

Yesterday, Norfolk County Council agreed to continue to support the post-16 transport subsidy for young people enabling them to travel to their chosen place of study. This was a fantastic decision for the young people of Norfolk, particularly given the context of the volume of cuts the County Council needed to make and the decision in the House of Commons last night to confirm the scrapping of the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA). It was a brave decision by Norfolk County Councillors and my thanks goes out to all of them - it's a good decision for Norfolk. Thank you.

Welcome to 2011

A belated Happy and Prosperous New Year to all.  2011 is gong to be a challenging year for every organisation in the public sector and City College Norwich will undoubtedly face many changes as the constraints on public funding starts to bite. However, we are confident of our ability to respond to those challenges and ensure that City College Norwich remains a great place to study and/or train. Here's to 2011!!!

Transport for students - a huge issue for Norfolk

Latest week saw the best ever turn out of people coming to City College Norwich to our Autumn Term Open Days on Friday and Saturday - across both days over 5,000 people came! That was hugely encouraging and, given the economic climate at the moment, it is very positive that so many young people are looking to continue in education and training so as to get as many skills and qualifications as they can in order to achieve a sustainable working career.

Graduation with Stephen Fry and Richard Jewson

Well, I'm note sure that we will ever be able to "top" last Saturday's Graduation Ceremony at the Norwich Cathedral .... We had a wonderful speech from Stephen Fry in the morning ceremony. Full of humour and wit and with a genuine story of how City College Norwich gave him the chance that he needed to get his life back on track and helped him get into Cambridge University, where the Footlights and Hugh Laurie made him who he is today.
